If ever proof was needed that the mindset that drives some people to be cruel to animals can lead to the same people harming humans, we need look no further than the “animal torturing teens” item in Issue 2212 (South Edition) of this newspaper.
After torturing pigs and goats to death the teenagers in question, according to a police spokeswoman, were “planning to get dressed with a scream mask on Halloween and brutally beat a randomly chosen pedestrian”.
We are all sentient beings (animals are now recognised as such by the New Zealand government) and, to my mind, it would not seem unreasonable for offenders such as these to receive sentences more in line with those applied to those who inflict harm on human beings.
