Church bells in Jávea port have been silenced by the courts as they are ‘too loud’.
A local resident who has been filing complaints since 2009 to the council, police, Guardia Civil and regional ombudsman has finally won his battle against the hourly chimes.
Juan Vicente Roig Sapena even wrote to the archbishop of Valencia, cardinal Antonio Cañizares, saying the constant clanging around the clock was making his life hell.
They rang out on the hour and did a swift ring on the quarter – and half-hours, then chimed for several minutes ahead of Mass.
Sr Roig argued that ‘everyone has a clock in their house these days’ and that the hourly chimes were not necessary.
