Hunting pirate taxis at the airport

ELCHE local police have been continuing to carry out checks and inspections on transportation services and traffic violations at Alicante-Elche airport during the month of March.

Amongst the cases detected by officers in recent weeks was a vehicle that had been left without a driver in a no-parking area, a city hall spokesman explained.

Just as the vehicle was being towed away, the owner appeared with three people who were supposedly residents – one British, one Irish and the other Czech – who he said he was going to take to his home.

The officers were suspicious so decided to interview them all, and found that they did not even know each other’s names.

As a result of this, the driver eventually admitted he was providing an illegal service, as he was making trips from the airport to Torrevieja and back, charging €15 per person each way.

Police also took action when they saw one person and a group of other people a few metres away – they were not talking amongst each other, but all got into one vehicle together.
