La Palma has been chosen as an alternative site for the world’s largest telescope, presently planned to be built in Hawaii. However, legal problems and public opposition have delayed the project. If the Canary Islands site is finally chosen, it would bring the region an annual investment of €25 million in salaries for 120 staff and contracts for supplies.
