Documents dating from December 1940, recently declassified by the UK’s National Archive, suggest that the German community in the Canary Islands may have been working with Hitler to stage a coup. The action would have given Germany a strategic foothold for Atlantic operations. Spain was officially neutral in World War II but the British government noted “significant military activity” on the islands.
