The European Commission will not fine Spain for failing continually to meet its deficit targets. The EC said last week that a sanction of around €2 billion would have further aggravated the situation and caused increased poverty through austerity cuts and tax rises. The same decision was taken for Portugal which, like Spain, has also breached the Eurozone debt limit on several occasions.
