Virtual kidnap scam scares Málaga family

Fraudsters said woman had been snatched in Mexico and demanded €600,000

A MÁLAGA woman and her family have been the victims of a virtual kidnapping. National Police activated their abduction protocol when the woman’s sister contacted them to report having received a demand for €600,000 to free the supposed victim who was working in Mexico.

Those responsible for the scam had previously telephoned the woman at her Mexico hotel, posing as police officers and warning her she was in danger. They advised her to move to somewhere safe and to acquire a new mobile phone which they would use to communicate with her.
