SIXTY homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure during a wheat field fire in Almargen on Monday, and one woman was treated for smoke inhalation, said the 112 emergency service.

The fire broke out at around 5pm and quickly spread through the agricultural field, which is adjacent to a residential area and near the town’s industrial estate. Some homeowners attempted to use hose pipes or buckets to protect the areas around their homes but finally had to retreat as the flames approached. Firefighters on the ground tackled the blaze with the aid of two helicopters.
