TWO people have been arrested in La Coruña during a week which saw firefighters battle many outbreaks across large swathes of northern Spain. Thousands of hectares have been razed in Galicia and investigators believe most of the fires were started intentionally, with more than 200 reported in three and a half days last week.
A woman, 56, is in custody without bail suspected of deliberately starting 15 countryside fires. The suspect, who has no previous record of committing arson, was caught last Friday morning as she allegedly tried to set seven more fires using scented candles. And a man accused of starting a fire accidently has been freed but ordered to report to the court every fortnight.
