A SEWAGE pipeline off the coast of Nerja has been found to be in a worse state than first thought. The 30-year-old infrastructure lies off the coast and was recently found to be leaking 300 metres offshore from the mouth of the Chillar river.

First inspections found a fracture, 20 by 20 centimetres in size, but another rupture found 100 metres away last week is also allowing untreated sewage into the sea. The 1,600-metre pipeline, which dumps untreated sewage further out to sea, may now have to be replaced because Nerja’s planned water treatment plant is not yet in operation.
