THE Granada town of Alfacar has been in mourning after learning that a 27-year-old local woman was the only Spanish fatality of last Wednesday’s devastating earthquake in central Italy. Ana Huete Aguilar was on holiday with her Italian husband Christian Casini and the couple were staying in the remote village of Illica, about 20 kilometres south-east of the epicentre, when the magnitude 6.2 earth movement began in the middle of the night.

While the men of the family were sleeping on the upper floor, four women from Christian’s family, as well as Ana, were on the ground floor. Christian was taken to hospital with serious injuries after rescuing his five-year-old niece from the rubble but Ana remained buried along with Christian’s mother, who was rescued alive after five hours. Later in the day, Christian phoned Ana’s parents who live in Viznar to break the bad news.
