ALICANTE city council is offering visitors a chance to go back in time by visiting the Civil War air raid shelters that have been partially restored.
Alicante city was bombed several times by national front troops during the war, the worst being the bombing of the Mercado Central on May 25, 1938, when over 300 people were killed and over 1,000 injured. Alicante was the last ‘Republican’ city to fall to General Franco in 1939.
