Public help sought in battle against palm weevil

Tree-killing pest has been detected in several zones of Mijas; town hall urges private owners to check their trees

MIJAS town hall has called on residents to help battle the scourge of red palm weevils by reporting any sightings of the tree-killing pest.

Workers from the town’s Parks and Gardens Department have recently spotted the weevil in palm trees in three areas of the town – Huerto Los Naranjos, Calahonda and La Cala – said councillor Lourdes Burgos last week.

“Our workers are examining the trees in public areas, but not on private properties,” where it is “critical” that residents report any sightings of the weevil, she said.
