People suffering gluten intolerance pay each month around €127 more on food than the average shopper because of the IVA tax on gluten-free products. A campaign is underway to reduce the tax on such foods from 21% to the lowest 4% rate which applies to basic food products. Experts say an estimated 1% of the population are gluten-intolerant, although many others may be undiagnosed.
