“Populismo” (populism) is the word of 2016, according to the Fundéu BBVA which makes its annual choice based on current events and linguistic interest. It said the word was originally neutral but now has connotations making it a political weapon. Other contenders included “posverdad” (post-truth), “youtubero” (a YouTube video poster) and “Ningufoneo” (a mobile phone user who ignores people walking in front of them).
