Madrid city centre goes pedestrian for festive shopping

Gran Vía and surrounding streets to be restricted to traffic on peak days

MADRID is closing part of the city centre to private vehicles for a large part of the coming festive period. The town hall says the action is being taken to “gain space for pedestrians, especially at a time of high commercial activity”.

Gran Vía and surrounding streets will be pedestrianised on certain peak days ahead of Christmas, and for 24 hours a day from December 23 to January 8. The first 10-day closure bagan last Friday, December 2, and continues until December 11.
