Parking ticket thwarts airport thief

A 60-YEAR-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing baggage at Alicante-Elche airport and having false documentation.

Elche local police noticed a badly parked car in one of the basement levels and started writing up a ticket, explained a city hall spokeswoman.

When the driver appeared, claiming he was returning from the toilet, he said he had no documentation.

After being told that without this he could not drive the car and it would be towed away, he showed a non-EU driving licence, which made the officers suspicious so they called for back-up to analyse whether it was genuine.

There was some baggage in the car and while the officers were busy writing up the parking ticket the driver snuck away to get rid of a rucksack, using his foot to slide it under a bus.

The bus driver noticed and alerted the officers, who recovered the bag and found a laptop computer inside.

At the same time, some tourists were at the airport police station reporting that their baggage had gone missing.
