SOME 500 people turned out on Saturday for a protest demanding the launch of work on the long-awaited upgrade to the Torremolinos Cercanías train station, which lacks adequate disabled access.

The protest, which had been announced in February by activist group Ascensor ¡Ya! (Lift Now!), moved forward despite Renfe’s announcement two weeks ago that the project is now out to tender, with bids to be accepted until April 2 and opened on June 4. However, the state rail company did not specify when work on the station will start, saying only that once the project gets underway the completion timeline will be 18 months.
