FUENGIROLA’S beachgoers have a new, easy way to check how much sun protection they need when sun-bathing or swimming in the sea, after the local council installed a new traffic light-style UV radiation monitoring system.

The system features five coloured lights, ranging from green – indicating a low UV index level of between 1 and 2 – up to the purple extreme level of 11+. The lights are accompanied by an informational board explaining the index and offering other sun protection tips, in both English and Spanish. The monitors have been placed outside three of the town’s lifeguard offices, on the Castillo, Fuengirola and Los Boliches beaches.
