ALMOST eight million tonnes of edible food is thrown away by Spanish supermarkets every year. Now, a petition bearing 800,000 signatures from across Europe, is demanding that the EU direct the retailers to donate such unwanted produce to non-governmental groups.
The Organisation of Consumers and Users has called on Madrid to introduce legislation to reduce food wastage and to force shops to give away surplus food which is suitable for consumption. Similar moves are already underway in France and Italy.
