Axarquía village votes - not for independence but for a flag

Canillas de Albaida's new municipal flag

WHILE the eyes of the world have been on Cataluña, the Axarquía village of Canillas de Albaida, population 800, has been holding its own referendum. Throughout last week, residents were casting their votes on the choice of a new flag for the municipality.

After local people complained they did not have a flag, the town council agreed last April that it should adopt one by popular consent. Residents and anyone born in Canillas de Albaida, as long as they are over the age of 14, were invited to choose from amongst the five designs suggested by heraldic experts, and when the result was declared on Friday, there was a clear winner.
