POLICE in Spain have opened an investigation after a 15-year-old girl from Cataluña was hospitalised while participating in the so-called Blue Whale Challenge on Facebook. Participants are dared to undertake 50 tasks of increasing complexity in 50 days and must film themselves achieving each one.

However, while the initial tasks are straightforward, they gradually become more extreme, involving self-harm, and the final challenge is to commit suicide. Police believe that, as the craze has spread, several youngsters around the world have already died.
