Tightened border controls were rolled out last Friday in the 26-country Schengen passport-free area. Under the stricter system, EU citizens will have their documents checked against security databases when entering or leaving the Schengen area. This includes Spain’s border with Gibraltar. Spanish officials have urged EU citizens to travel with biometric passports to take advantage of automated checkpoint machines.
