Plans to deregulate the hiring of stevedores at Spanish ports were defeated in parliament last Thursday. Workers had threatened a nationwide strike if the proposals had been adopted. Presently, only staff trained by specialist Spanish companies can be hired and the country’s 6,000 dockers feared that opening up the sector to competition would put their jobs and salaries at risk.
