Spain now has more pet animals than children per household. The Madrid Association of Small Animal Vets says at least 25% of homes have at least one pet. Dogs are most popular with 5.2 million being kept as pets, followed 2.3 million cats. The study also says that dogs are the most expensive pet, costing an average €814 a year to keep.
