CATALUÑA’S new regional parliament held its first session yesterday, January 17, following the election held on December 21 which returned a majority of pro-independence candidates as Deputies. However, eight of those voted into office were expected to be absent.

Former president Carles Pugidemont remains in exile in Brussels with four colleagues while his former deputy Oriol Junqueras was refused bail from his Madrid jail cell earlier this month (CDSN last week). The same applies to former regional interior minister, Joaquim Forn, and the former chairman of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), Jordi Sánchez, who were both elected but remain in preventive custody, also in Madrid.
