El Gordo lottery set to hand out 2.24 billion euros

WORK in Spain will continue very slowly, if at all, on Tuesday morning as the whole country stops to watch this year’s El Gordo draw hand out almost 2.3 billion euros in prizes, the same total as in 2014.

The Christmas Lottery, televised in a live programme on RTVE starting at 8am on the morning of December 22 every year, brings the nation to a standstill.

As usual, children from the San Ildefonso College will sing the numbers on the wooden balls drawn from a pool of 100,000.
