Gibraltar has begun installing new ‘monkey-proof’ rubbish and recycling bins that were designed by a local youth as an A-level school project.

Jared Peralta came up with the new bins – which are aimed at keeping the Rock’s famous Barbary macaques out of the trash – as part of his Design and Technology A-level in 2014.

Five of them have now been installed “at strategic points around Gibraltar,” said the government last week, noting that the bins located in the Upper Rock will keep the macaques from creating a mess in the area, while those placed outside the Upper Rock will serve to remove the enticement of easy scraps that attract the primates to these areas.

The Department of the Environment and Climate Change liaised with Jared Peralta, the Tourist Board, the Macaque Management Team and Monkey Talks’ Brian Gomila to determine the final design and placement of the bins, as well as the content of the interpretation panels included on them, said officials.
