Doubts cast on shark attack

    Bluefish rather than blue shark the more likely culprit

    HYSTERIA over a supposed shark attack gripped beachgoers and then the media in Spain and the UK after a man suffered a bite to his hand while in the sea at Arenales del Sol in Elche on Friday.

    The victim, a local man aged about 40, was taken to Elche and then Vinalopó hospital, where he was given stitches to the deep wound.

    Rumours spread like wildfire and there were numerous ‘shark sightings’ reported to lifeguards and even the emergency services throughout the day.
