The ‘dire situation’ of the lower stretch of the River Algar – a natural area of great environmental value which is included in the region’s catalogue of wetlands – has been denounced by ecologists.

It is suffering eutrophication, which causes harmful algal blooms and dead zones leading to fish deaths, as has occurred in the Mar Menor and the River Wye in the UK.
