Nuclear plant security upped over DAESH threat

NEARLY 500 Guardia Civil officers will be on permanent patrol around Spain’s nuclear energy and waste plants – one of which is in Cofrentes (inland Valencia province).
They will be stationed at the plants to guard against possible attacks by Jihad terrorists.
With Spain now on terrorism alert level 4 – one below the maximum of 5 – nuclear power stations are among the critical areas where security needs to increase, says acting minister for the interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz.
A terrorist attack on a nuclear plant could have devastating consequences, and the Spanish caretaking government fears that as well as airports, concert and sports venues, and bus and railway stations, the so-called ‘Islamic State’ may target reactors such as the one in Cofrentes.
