OVER €920,000 were paid out in emergency benefits to Gandia’s most hard-pressed families in 2015.
The town council is in charge of handing out urgent income support, although about 25% of the funds come from the regional government, says social responsibility councillor Nahuel González.
Social services evaluate each case and hand out cash to households who are struggling the most financially.
These cover food, rent or mortgage, electricity and water, among other basic expenses.
In the case of single parents – most of whom are women in Gandia – funds are available for after-school activities where childcare is too expensive.
