The Mar Menor has been granted the legal status of a person, thus enabling the public to demand restoration of environmental damage done to the lagoon.
It is the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe and the first natural space on the continent to gain recognised legal rights.
The approval of the Senate on Wednesday was the culmination of a public legislation initiative (ILP) launched over two years ago.
