A former state lawyer for Almería and six other people are to go on trial in July on extortion charges in a case allegedly involving millions of Iraqi dinars stolen during the first Gulf war.
Demetrio Carmona, who served as the province’s state lawyer for 25 years before resigning in January 2013, is one of seven individuals allegedly implicated in a bizarre plot to steal more than 128 million Iraqi dinars that were illicitly taken out of Iraq in 1996.
According to press reports, the public prosecutor accused Carmona of gathering classified “personal and financial” information to extort two local businessmen.
