THE Júcar river consortium (Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar, or CHJ) has decreed the pre-alert warning for drought.
Members are becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of rainfall, to the extent of calling for the implementation of measures to reduce water consumption and search for alternative, underground resources to prevent possible supply restrictions.
The Júcar river system is by far the most important in the region and responsible for supplying drinking water to the whole of Valencia province.
According to the water users’ trades unions, the situation is ‘very worrying’ as it has hardly rained since last October.
