Parts of the coast in the south of Alicante province and Murcia region are being considered as candidates to be declared Important Shark and Ray areas by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
These areas were proposed based on scientific results from various research projects.
Around half of the rays and sharks in the Mediterranean are at high risk of extinction from continuous overfishing.
