Tiny salt lake organisms could help fight cancer

Anti-carcinogenic capabilities have been identified in a pigment found in the salt lakes of Santa Pola by researchers from Alicante university (UA).

This pigment is produced by certain microorganisms – halophilic archaea or haloarchaea – to protect themselves from the sun, and its anti-tumour capacity has been trialled on various types of breast cancer.
