Pigs being reared in a local pig farm

Residents of a hamlet outside Huércal-Overa are furious over plans by a local pig farm to expand, and residents of Los Pilares outside Albox are concerned after the council gave permission for an intensive pig farm to be installed near their homes.

The overall development plan for the far-east of the province has overseen a massive expansion in pig farming. Last year, 25 per cent of all pigs in Andalucía were reared there before being taken elsewhere for processing.

The La Morena pig farm, sited in the hamlet of San Francisco just outside Huércal-Overa, currently has permission to rear 484 pigs. The company has sought planning permission to expand its operations to allow the rearing of 2,500 pigs at once.

Albox council gave permission this week for an intensive pig farm containing up to 2,498 pigs to be built despite concerns from residents. The motion allows the company to seek full planning permission.
