Priors blindsided by council costs bill

The British couple whose Vera house was demolished say they will ‘go to jail’ rather than pay

A retired British couple awarded compensation by the courts for the demolition of their house in 2008 have received a bill for nearly €25,000 in legal costs from Vera council for a court case they lost against the council in 2012.

Helen and Len Prior’s home on the outskirts of Vera was knocked down after the Junta de Andalucía revoked their building licence, granted by Vera council.

The couple, both now 73, have lived in their garage ever since surrounded by other villas that did not meet with the same fate.
