Police have arrested a 76-year-old man after he allegedly drove on the wrong side of the A-7 motorway before colliding with two vehicles and severely injuring an 11-year-old boy.

The accident happened on Saturday morning (March 5) on kilometre 437 close to the provincial capital. The boy’s 18-year-old sister and another person were also hurt.

The driver, who handed himself in to the Guardia Civil days later, drove for about 300 metres before hitting a lorry and a car. The individual then failed to stop to help the injured and fled the scene.

Firemen had to cut through the wreckage to free the two victims, who were travelling in a white 4X4 driven by their mother who was uninjured. Although the woman was released from hospital the following the day, her younger brother remains in the intensive care unit of Torrecárdenas hospital with a head injury.
