Albox’s first ever female mayor, Sonia Cerdán, was sworn in this week by the narrowest of margins after failing to muster more votes than the opposition parties.
Sra Cerdán, who at 33 is also the town’s youngest ever mayor, was voted in with the support of eight ruling councillors from her Somos Albojenses party – the same number as the opposition Partido Popular and Cilius parties combined.
But the council secretary gave Sra Cerdán the nod after quoting the rule book for such eventualities, stating that the winning candidate should belong to the most voted party at the last elections.
During her inaugural speech, the new mayor – Albox’s third in as many years – stressed that “transparency” and “citizen participation” would be two of her administration’s pillars.
