The tortoise after it was rescued by the Guardia

By Richard Torné

A rare species of tortoise that was kept in appalling conditions at an abandoned pig farm in Turre has been rescued by the Guardia.

Officers found the large reptile, an African spurred tortoise, in a narrow passageway only 80 centimetres wide. The space was so narrow the animal could only move backwards or forwards, the Guardia added in a statement.

The tortoise was in a poor state of health, and was suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. There were also signs of damage to its shell.
