Expat community bitterly divided over mayor’s decision to seize control of development

A meeting in Turre to inform residents about the mayor’s decision to take over the running of the Cortijo Cabrera urbanisation descended into chaos last week when two people were involved in a punch up.

The meeting, arranged by mayor Martin Morales and chaired by the AUAN property rights association, was aimed at explaining last month’s decision by Sr Morales to seize control of the mountain-side urbanisation, citing the developers’ failure to complete its construction.

The move has split the 200-strong community. Although some support the mayor, others wish to maintain the current management system under which developers pay for infrastructure but not maintenance costs.
