Parliament has voted to extend the state of emergency for two more weeks until June 21.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said it would be last time he asked for an extension – and it would be the final period under emergency conditions.

Sr Sánchez told Parliament yesterday that his Cabinet will approve a decree on June 9 to regulate the ‘new normality’ when the state of emergency finishes, which will contain measures to prevent any further outbreaks of coronavirus.

He said data showed that Spain has survived the worst of the pandemic which is gripping the world ‘thanks to the efforts and resistance of the Spanish people’.

However, he warned that the virus is ‘still amongst us’ and it is necessary to continue with prudence and some restrictions following scientific advice.
