A rare species of mollusc found only in the Mediterranean is dying out along the Almería coastline, according to the regional government’s environmental department.

The ‘noble pen shell’ or ‘fan mussel’ is a large species of Mediterranean clam, mainly found in the Levante and Cabo de Gata but also in waters off Almería, Granada and Málaga.

A recent survey covering 60 kilometres of coastline discovered a massive reduction in the numbers of the shellfish, to the point where known groups of the molluscs appear to have completely died out.
