A man who allegedly assaulted a doctor in Almería city’s Torrecárdenas hospital after he disagreed with a diagnosis about his mental state has been arrested.

The alleged attack happened on December 12 in the A&E ward of the provincial capital’s main hospital.

According to the police, the attacker asked to be admitted into the psychiatric unit but became irate when he was told by a specialist that he “did not meet the requirements for admission”. The individual then shouted “you’ll admit me now” before punching the medic in the face.

Police were called out to the incident and charged the 29-year-old man with assault.

A statement by the Junta de Almería said the hospital’s administration “lamented and condemned” the attack, adding that it would demand a criminal prosecution to ensure the man was jailed. If found guilty, the individual faces being sent to prison for up to three years.
