Former Mojacar mayor Gabriel Flores has died at the age of 66 following a battle against cancer.

According to sources, he had been ill for some time and died on Sunday at home surrounded by his family. More than 100 people, including mayor Rosa María Cano and opposition politicians, attended his funeral on Monday.

Flores, a teacher by profession, retired from local politics in May 2015 following a poor showing at the municipal elections for his Unión Mojaquera party.

He led Mojacar council for two turbulent years from 2005 to 2007 as member of the Socialist PSOE party. He rose to power under questionable circumstances following the defection of a ruling councillor and by joining forces with Sra Cano from the conservative Partido Popular.
