An alleged attack on a donkey being used in a live nativity scene in Cuevas del Almanzora last week “never happened”, according to police.
The news that somebody had broken into the nativity scene last Tuesday, December 6, and slashed the three-year-old donkey with a knife made national headlines. Mayor Fernández promised “justice for a horrible act” and local newspaper Ideal found a witness who claimed two young men had drunkenly started to abuse the animal until scared away by a passer-by.
But a veterinary report commissioned by the Guardia Civil this week poured cold water onto the allegations and said that the scratches were “self inflicted” by the animal scratching itself against a wall.
