Theresa May ‘will not acknowledge’ Catalan independence

British PM Theresa May told her Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy today (Tuesday) that she ‘will not acknowledge” an independent Cataluña. A statement released this afternoon says both PMs held a telephone conversation over the Brexit talks, fires in Galicia and the Catalan situation.

Number 10 revealed the Government believes the referendum was ‘illegal’ and Mrs May said any unilateral declaration from Catalonia “would be inconsistent with the rule of law,” a statement similar to those already expressed by others European leaders including Emanuel Macron, president of Cataluña’s others neighbouring conuntry, France.
