Fire at famous Roman baths site

“We want to assure people that the Roman remains have not been damaged and the area which was affected will be able to recover.”
These were the words of Calpe mayoress Ana Sala after visiting the Baños de la Reina with council officers on Monday. Calpe town hall has been investigating whether the blaze was caused by a firework display on Saturday night.
They found that around one hectare of the site has been burned and the flames ‘did not affect the remains of the Roman villa, nor the Roman baths’.
Sra Sala noted that the area which had gone on fire was ‘the industrial zone of the site’ close to the Morelló mill.
